You don’t need a perfect answer to “should we use Nginx?” You need a decision you can defend, maintain, and ship.
Here’s a scorecard method that keeps you from drowning in benchmarks, hot takes, and edge cases.
We’ll assume you’re often checking things from an iPhone (notes in Google Docs, tickets in Google Chat/Gmail, etc.), so the method is designed to be easy to run in short bursts.
Before we score anything: Nginx is usually competing with Caddy, Traefik, HAProxy, Envoy, and “a managed load balancer plus minimal config.” The best choice depends on what you’re optimizing for.
Step 1: Pick your candidates (keep it to 3)
Overthinking starts when you compare 6–10 options “just to be sure.” Don’t.
Pick 3 candidates that are realistic for your environment and team. A common set:

- Learning curve (x2): How quickly can a new teammate debug common issues?
- Total cost of ownership (x2): Licensing (if relevant), time, and complexity—not just dollars.
A simple rule: if an option wins by 10+ weighted points, stop. If it’s within 10, use the tie-breakers later in this article.
Step 3: Fill in Nginx’s row (a realistic starting point)
Nginx is a “default choice” in many orgs because it’s predictable and widely understood. That’s a real advantage—if it matches your operating model.
- Operational fit: Often strong. Lots of docs, lots of examples, plenty of “seen this before” knowledge.
- Security & TLS: Strong when configured well. But it’s easy to carry forward old snippets without revisiting modern TLS guidance.
- Reliability under change: Good. Config test + reload workflows are common and mature.
- Performance headroom: Usually excellent for typical reverse proxy use.
- Features you actually need: Broad, but some “nice” things (e.g., certain dynamic behaviors) can be more manual than modern alternatives.
- Learning curve: Medium. Config is readable, but there are gotchas (inheritance, location matching rules).
- Total cost of ownership: Often low to moderate, depending on how much custom config and glue you accumulate.
If your team already has known-good templates and a standard way to ship config safely, Nginx tends to score well.
Step 4: Quick comparison notes (Nginx vs common alternatives)
You can keep this lightweight: you’re not writing a thesis, you’re choosing something you can run.
- Nginx vs Caddy: Caddy often wins on “security & TLS story” and day-1 simplicity; Nginx often wins on familiarity and breadth of battle-tested patterns in the wild.
- Nginx vs Traefik: Traefik can win hard when your world is dynamic service discovery; Nginx can win when you want explicit, static config and fewer moving parts.
- Nginx vs HAProxy: HAProxy is a strong choice for high-performance load balancing and L4/TCP scenarios; Nginx is very strong at HTTP reverse proxy and static content, plus general-purpose use.
- Nginx vs Envoy: Envoy is powerful but tends to pull in more complexity; choose it when you need what it’s good at (advanced traffic management, deep observability, mesh compatibility).
Notice what’s missing: micro-benchmarks. They matter only after you’re sure you can operate the system safely.
Step 5: Tie-breakers that prevent “analysis paralysis”
If your top two options are close, use tie-breakers that reduce regret later.
- Who will be on-call? Pick the one your on-call person can debug at 2 a.m.
- How often will config change? If it changes daily, favor safer validation/reload flows and clearer config.
- Do you need dynamic service discovery? If yes, you may be forcing Nginx into a job it doesn’t enjoy.
- What’s your “exit plan”? Choose the option you can migrate away from without rewriting your whole stack.
- What will you standardize? Fewer variants across teams beats a theoretically perfect choice in one corner.
These are deliberately human factors. They’re usually the difference between “works in a lab” and “works for a year.”
Step 6: A 15-minute workflow you can run from your iPhone (Google tools)
If you’re doing the comparison in small windows of time, make it easy to capture and share.
- Google Docs: Create a one-page scorecard table (candidates as columns, criteria as rows, weights on the left).
- Google Keep: Keep a running note titled “Proxy decision: unknowns” and add questions as they pop up.
- Gmail/Chat: Ask one targeted question per option (example: “How do we do safe reloads/validation in our deploy pipeline?”).

Your goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty. It’s to make uncertainty visible and bounded.

If Nginx wins your scorecard because your team can operate it confidently, that’s a good reason. If it loses because you need dynamic routing/discovery and simpler TLS automation, that’s also a good reason.
